“Be as a bird perched on a frail branch that she feels bending beneath her, still she sings away all the same, knowing she has wings.”
Victor Hugo
There are "birders" and there are "Bird Watchers" I doubt that anyone has actually come up with a distinction. So I will do so:
A "Birder" is a person who wants to see as many bird in his or her lifetime as is possible. These people become storehouses of local knowledge regarding the occurrence of bird species and are a great resource.
A "Birdwatcher" is a person who simply watches birds. Such a person spends hours walking slowly and stopping often as he or she becomes enchanted by the actions of a pair of birds in the Spring or a single bird foraging and defending its territory. I am a Birdwatcher.
